AVL ROADSIM™ Chassis Dynamometer - Testing Solutions for Passenger Cars
AVL ROADSIM™ Chassis Dynamometer
AVL offers various products ranging from motorcycles to trucks, each in one or two axles design, suit all application requirements. The cradle mounted motors arranged beside or between the rollers electrically simulate the requested load condition taking into account the mechanical base inertia.
Benefits at a Glance
- Highly accurate force and speed measurement through modern sensor equipment
- Modular design allows flexible configuration (optional packages) according to testing needs
- Independent function generators for e. g. speed ramps, ABS testing
- Local service capability with short response time
- Proven record of numerous installations

The international exhaust emission regulation specifies vehicle chassis dynamometer testbeds for exhaust gas analysis in such a detailed manner that standards have been established for this application. AVL standard chassis dynamometer testbeds are designed for the purpose of exhaust gas analysis. On the basis of their accuracy and availability, certified by references, these systems are used for exhaust analysis certification.
Mileage Accumulation Testing
Mileage accumulation testing represents an important part in the development and approval of vehicles and their components. The main focus of mileage accumulation testbeds is endurance testing on the complete vehicle.
Research and Development Testing
The growing complexity of powertrain management systems and the close interaction of engine and transmission control unit (ECU and TCU) in combination with emission legislations often require a joint R&D testing.
Noise, Vibration and Harshness Testing (NVH)
The main purpose of NVH-testing is the reduction and quality assurance of the interior and exterior vehicle noise. Furthermore the excitation of the chassis can be evaluated by the simulation of various power train mounting arrangements and/or baffle plates. Stable environmental conditions in conjunction with precisely applied road load simulations allow a highly efficient trouble shooting on the chassis dynamometer. Exchangeable roller surfaces allow simulating real road textures.
Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing (EMC)
The EMC tests can be grouped into:
- Tests dedicated to measure the emissions of the test specimen
- Tests dedicated to verify the immunity of the test specimen
- Immunity tests in an EMC chamber have usually three variables:
- The field strength
- The frequency
- The angle of the unit under test in the field
AVL has more than 25 years experience in building test beds for electromagnetic compatibility testing. Along with the exact simulation of road conditions, the orientation of the vehicle with regard to the antenna is crucial.
