EMC testing summarizes tests dedicated to measuring the emissions of the test specimen and tests to verify the immunity of the test specimen.

AVL Approach

Along with the exact simulation of road load conditions and the low electromagnetic emissions of the chassis dynamometer itself, the orientation of the vehicle with regard to the antenna is crucial. The whole chassis dynamometer can be rotated to align the vehicle to e.g. the electromagnetic field.

System Scope

Optional  Pneumatic Robot Driver
The easy to install robot driver, with its control unit which is also part of the central control cabinet, represents an essential part of a vehicle test system. This robot driver makes it possible to operate the accelerator (gas) pedal, the gear shift lever of a manual or automatic transmission, the brake and the clutch pedal. The system is designed to be failsafe: in case of emergency the clutch is pressed and the accelerator pedal released. Software is included for the closed-loop speed control of the vehicle under test. It can be extended by a human drive style upgrade and/or a keyboy to start/stop of the vehicle.

Chassis Dynamometer
The chassis dynamometer is designed for transient testing requirements. The design has been proven through many installations. It includes a DC dynamometer specifically designed for vehicle testing. An encoder mounted on the dynamometer shaft provides highly accurate speed measurement. Tractive force is measured using a load cell. The chassis dynamometer is equipped with two movable axles.
The chassis dynamometer controller VECON provides the fundamental control function for transient testing modes and monitors the vehicle.

The turntable accommodates the complete mechanical chassis dynamometer configuration and allows it to rotate. The rotation can also be carried out while the chassis dynamometer is in operation. There are two turning speeds and the turntable position can be set on the control console.

Wheelbase Adjustment Unit
By traversing the roller sets, the wheelbase for the vehicle under test can be adjusted. The operation of the wheelbase adjustment units is only possible when the rollers are at standstill. The wheelbase or the distance of each of the axles to the turntable center can be adjusted via set point value entered at VECON. Both axles can be positioned independently from each other. An AC motor drives the worm gears and absolute encoders measure the position.

Vehicle Cooling
For repeatable testing conditions a vehicle cooling fan is used. The rotational speed of the fan is controlled. It is mounted on a support structure with four moveable rollers. This allows the fan to be aligned with the front of the vehicle so, for example, it can cool the engine radiator. The fan control cabinet sets the speed dependent flow rate via a frequency converter.

Test System Mechanics
The test system mechanics include a suitable sized and robustly designed vehicle restraint system and an optional vehicle monitoring system. The vehicle position monitoring system alerts the user of any movement of the test vehicle's position. The restraint system on the front and rear of the vehicle allows high dynamic acceleration and deceleration during test runs.

System Integration and Start-Up Service
The system integration services contain all services for an efficient project execution from project kick-off until final acceptance. In addition, a pre-acceptance on AVL site and FOB packing and transport can be chosen. With the 'extended start up services' extension the user is assisted in reaching his or her initial knowledge for optimal system operation.
