Detection of audible noise at earliest development stages

Audible Noise Prediction

Simulation and analysis of electro-acoustics

The trend towards the electrification of the powertrain continues due to the ongoing quest for reduced emissions. As a result, new noise phenomena which were previously not noticeable have become a new focus for NVH development.

These noise phenomena have become audible because of the missing masking of the internal combustion engine and they can be annoying to the driver due to their tonality. An optimized solution for the reduction of these sounds requires simulation-based noise prediction in power supplies and power electronics.

At AVL our electro-acoustic simulation approach enables us to identify noise sources and reduce noise as it typically occurs in all types of electric and electronic devices. Our analysis covers all relevant components such as e-machine, DCDC converters and power electronics.

Noise Emission Prediction by Simulation

Our NVH development process begins with a purely virtual approach, allowing us to directly target sources of NVH excitation at the individual assembly level. We end up with a mature NVH design, without compromising other critical aspects, such as performance, efficiency and packaging.

During both the concept design and troubleshooting phases, our methodology enables us to understand the root-causes of the NVH issue. This allows us to provide feasible and robust solutions and countermeasures to our customers.

Our NVH simulation capabilities support the optimization of the development process, by identifying the root cause of noise emissions right from the concept design phase. Physical parameters and electrical stimulation are all assessed to understand the impact of electronic components on audible noise emission.

Initially the NVH assessment can be fully conducted by simulation, without the need for a physical product, saving time and reducing costs. With this insight, noise reduction can be designed into the system architecture, with a right-first-time approach that removes the need for trial-and-error.

For further investigations, AVL offers simulation approaches for analysis at a mechanical level, such as on PCBs and enclosures. From structure-borne sound to air-borne noise detection, we provide detailed analysis for all types of audible noise emissions. Various FEM tools enable our team to deliver comprehensive insights for AVL and customer project needs.

A Proven Approach to Electronics Development

With more than seven decades of automotive development experience, at AVL we understand all aspects of the vehicle. This knowledge enables us to support you in the development of systems that meet and exceed all your needs, and the demands of your customers.

Our holistic approach to system development means that we see each component not just as an individual item, but as a part of the complete vehicle. This enables us to find synergies that drive efficiency and performance, as well as discover cross-system problems that may otherwise be overlooked.

Our experience and knowledge also excels in the prediction of noise emission and transfer during vehicle development. We have been the chosen partner for many successful projects around the world, helping OEMs tackle noise emission challenges from the concept stage.
