25th Anniversary AVL Engine and Environment Conference - The Connected Powertrain
This year's Engine & Environment conference, which dealt with key aspects of modern engine and vehicle technology at a level well beyond topical issues and new approaches for the future, was hosted by AVL for the 25th time. The theme of this year's anniversary conference held on September 5 and 6, 2013, in Graz is "The Connected Powertrain – Interaction of Mechanics & Software, Vehicle, Driver and Environment." Top-ranking speakers from the international automotive industry and the fields of science and politics addressed the current topic from different angles.
Interconnectedness has become a central topic of the future in many areas – including automotive technology. The vehicle of tomorrow will communicate with its environment, enabling efficient, accident-free and quite possibly even autonomous driving. The powertrain of tomorrow's vehicle will also be connected: It will communicate with its environment (the driver, other vehicles, the infrastructure). Interconnectedness and optimized interaction between all powertrain components such as the engine, transmission, e-machine, battery and control are also becoming more and more important.
The international AVL conference Engine & Environment focused on modern drive concepts in the context of growing interconnectedness. The additional information from the outside can serve to harness the existing, yet still unused potential to enhance efficiency. This makes it possible to achieve significant improvements in those specific areas which today present the biggest challenges in the automotive industry: the requirement to cut CO2 emissions, reduce emissions in real driving operation and lower costs in components for powertrain electrification.
The Engine & Environment conference – a platform for experts from around the world
AVL has been specializing in the development of economical drive systems for more than 60 years. In 1988, the company hosted the Engine & Environment conference for the first time to provide an independent, neutral and international platform to promote the interdisciplinary discussion of key aspects in engine and vehicle technology in a wider social context – environmental and energy issues as well as legal framework conditions.
AVL is the world's largest independent company for development, simulation and testing technology of powertrains (hybrid, combustion engines, transmission, electric drive, batteries and software) for passenger cars, trucks and large engines. As of 2012, the high-tech company AVL had 6,200 employees worldwide and annual sales of EUR 1,015 million.
